How to choose explainer video software
Four questions narrow the field quickly. Answer them for the videos you make most often.
- 1
Does a person need to appear on screen?
If a face matters, as in a message from a manager or a sales video, start with an avatar generator. If the subject is a process, a system or an idea, an animated explainer usually shows it more clearly.
- 2
Do you want to build each scene yourself?
Editors such as VideoScribe and Doodly give you full control over every drawing and its timing. Generators make the whole video from your script, which is faster when you make videos often.
- 3
How long are your videos?
Many free plans stop at 1 to 3 minutes. For lessons and training modules of 10 minutes or more, check each plan’s limit. VideoScribe allows 20 minutes on Max, Scenema 30 minutes per chapter, HeyGen 60 on Business and Synthesia up to 4 hours.
- 4
Do you start from a document?
If your material is already in a PDF, Word file or slide deck, pick a tool that reads it. Scenema, Golpo AI, DistilBook and Synthesia all accept documents.
Which explainer video tool are you leaving?
Each comparison lists the alternatives to one tool, with that tool's own prices and limits. Pick the tool you use today.

How we compare: Every figure here comes from our comparison articles, which read each tool's own website and pricing page in October 2026. We report what each tool publishes and do not test video quality. Scenema is our own product, so each comparison also names the tool that fits better when Scenema does not.

Three kinds of explainer video tools
Most tools fall into one of three groups, and the group matters more than any single feature.
Editors
You build every scene: Place drawings or characters, set the timing and record or generate a voiceover. Editors give the most control and take the most time.
Examples: Doodly, VideoScribe, Powtoon and Vyond.
Avatar generators
You paste a script and an AI presenter reads it on screen. They suit announcements, sales messages and translated videos where a face matters.
Examples: Synthesia, HeyGen and Colossyan.
Animation generators
You give a script, a prompt or a document, and the tool writes or narrates it and animates every scene. They suit processes, lessons and product explainers.
Examples: Scenema, Golpo AI and DistilBook.
