Knowlify alternatives for animated explainer videos (2026)

Contents: What happened to Knowlify?

Knowlify used to turn documents into narrated, animated explainer videos for training, onboarding and customer education. However, in October 2026 the company retired its explainer, training and self-serve video products to make only video ads. The old app stays open to existing customers, but new users cannot sign up.

This guide is for anyone who turns documents into explainer or training videos. That includes training and HR teams, teachers, course creators, marketers and creators of faceless channels, as well as former Knowlify users. It compares seven alternatives, plus a free option from Google, then explains what Knowlify did and what to look for in a replacement. We surveyed the websites of all the tools we mention in October 2026.

What happened to Knowlify?

Knowlify retired its explainer video app in October 2026 and became an agency that makes video ads for Facebook and Instagram. Its about page says the company “retired the explainer, training and self-serve products to make only ads.” The legacy app at create.knowlify.com is open to existing customers only, who can email info@knowlify.com about their accounts. New clients get video ads and Meta campaign management.

Note: Knowlify is easy to confuse with knowlify.app, a separate note-taking app, and with several learning apps of the same name. This guide is about the explainer video tool at knowlify.com.

The best Knowlify alternatives

1

Scenema makes long animated explainers from your documents

Similar to Knowlify, Scenema starts from the material you already have. You upload a PDF, Word or text document, or paste a script, and Scenema writes the narration for you to review. It then plans the video as scenes and shots, which keeps the same characters and style in every scene. Videos run up to 21 minutes, in styles from flat 2D characters and motion graphics to whiteboard. Narration comes from over 500 voices in more than 75 languages, with optional captions. Paid plans add a brand kit for your logo and voice cloning for a brand voice.

The free plan gives 200 credits once on sign-up, for scripts of up to 1,000 characters, and exports at 480p with a watermark. See the pricing page for paid plans.

Best for: Training modules and explainers of 5 to 20 minutes with recurring characters.

2

Vyond is an animation builder for training teams

Vyond builds animated videos from templates and a large character library, and its Vyond Go feature drafts a video from a prompt, document or URL. It accepts .doc, .pdf, .ppt and .txt files. You then edit every scene yourself. Videos run up to 25, 40 or 90 minutes depending on the plan, with captions on every plan and voices in 95 languages. SCORM export for an LMS comes on the Enterprise and Agency plans. Vyond offers a free trial with watermarked exports rather than a free plan.

Best for: Training teams that want an AI draft and full control over every scene.

3

DistilBook turns documents into explainers in 19 styles

DistilBook turns a document into an explainer with narration and captions from a script you approve. It accepts PDFs, Word files, Markdown, text, images, links or a prompt. Its 19 styles include hand-drawn whiteboard looks and motion-graphics styles such as isometric illustration and cut-paper collage. Your logo and brand colors are included on every paid plan. Paid plans cost $20, $50 and $100 a month, and a whiteboard video can run to about 36 minutes.

Best for: Document-based explainers in several visual styles on a small budget.

4

Golpo AI makes whiteboard videos from documents

Golpo AI turns a PDF, Word file, slide deck, URL or prompt into a hand-drawn whiteboard explainer. Its cheaper plans are limited. Starter and Creator make black-and-white videos of up to 2 minutes, and 10-minute videos need the $499.99 Business plan. Our guide to Golpo AI alternatives covers its plans and prices in detail.

Best for: Short whiteboard explainers from documents.

5

Synthesia puts an avatar presenter on your documents

Synthesia turns documents, PowerPoint files or links into videos led by an AI avatar presenter. It speaks more than 140 languages, and one video can run up to 4 hours. The free plan gives 10 minutes of video a month with a watermark. SCORM export is on the Enterprise plan. HeyGen works in a similar way. It turns a PowerPoint or PDF into scenes with an avatar presenter, and its free plan gives 3 watermarked videos a month of up to 1 minute each. Both suit training where a presenter on screen helps, rather than animation that shows a process.

Best for: Presenter-led training in many languages.

6

Leadde turns slides and PDFs into lectures

Leadde converts PDFs, Word files and PowerPoint decks into training videos with an avatar or slide presenter. Its Leadde Motion feature generates process and explainer animations from prompts. Videos run up to 10 minutes on the free plan, 20 on Starter and 30 on Creator, in 88 languages. New accounts get 200 credits, and free videos carry a watermark.

Best for: Turning existing slide decks into narrated lectures.

7

Steve AI makes quick animated videos from text

Steve AI, from the makers of Animaker, turns text, scripts, PDFs or ideas into videos in several styles, including animation with a library of characters. It offers AI voices in more than 10 languages. The free plan includes 1,200 seconds of AI video, and paid plans remove the watermark.

Best for: Short animated videos made quickly from text.

8

Gemini Notebook makes short video overviews of your sources

Google’s Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, can turn the sources in a notebook into a narrated Video Overview. You choose a format, a language and a visual style such as whiteboard, watercolor or anime, and you can add a prompt to steer the focus. Short overviews run about 60 seconds, and the Explainer format supports more than 50 languages. Google does not publish a maximum length for the Explainer format. It is not in the table because Google’s help pages do not state its free limits.

Best for: Quick video summaries of study material you already keep in a notebook.

What did Knowlify’s explainer video app do?

Knowlify’s app turned a document into a narrated, animated video in a few minutes. According to its archived site from mid-2026, it offered:

  • Documents as input: PDFs, Google Docs, Word, Notion, Markdown, transcripts and outlines, or a URL to pull content from.
  • Script editing: You reviewed the script, changed it and re-rendered the video at any time.
  • Brand settings: Your colors, type, logo and voice on every video.
  • Export: MP4 files for YouTube, Vimeo, learning management systems (LMS) and other platforms, or a hosted link.
  • A studio service: For high-stakes videos, Knowlify’s team wrote, animated and delivered the video.

Its pricing page in May 2026 listed a free plan with watermarked videos, pay-as-you-go credits, and monthly plans from $499.

What to look for in a Knowlify alternative

Whether you used Knowlify or are choosing your first AI explainer video tool, look for one that turns the documents you already have into a clear, narrated video. Tick each item that matters to you, then compare the tools that meet it.

Checklist for choosing a Knowlify alternative

How to move your Knowlify videos to a new tool

If you still have access to the legacy Knowlify app, start by downloading the MP4 files of the videos you use. Knowlify’s site does not say how long the legacy app will stay open, so email info@knowlify.com if you have questions about your account. Then gather the material your videos were built from:

  1. Source documents: Collect the PDFs, docs and outlines behind each video, since every alternative above starts from them.
  2. Final scripts: Copy the edited script of each video, so the new narration matches what your learners already know.
  3. Brand settings: Note your logo files, colors, fonts and voice, and set them up once in the new tool.
  4. A pilot video: Remake one video you know well, and compare it with the original before you move the rest.

Should you use a video production studio instead?

A production studio suits one high-stakes video, such as a product launch or a medical procedure, where a team writes, animates and revises it with you. Knowlify’s studio service filled that role for some customers. For a training library that keeps growing, a self-serve AI tool such as Scenema, DistilBook or Vyond is usually faster and cheaper to keep up to date.

Turn your documents into an animated explainer

Upload a PDF or Word document, or paste a script. Scenema writes the narration, plans the scenes and keeps your characters and style consistent from the first shot to the last.
