Can Claude make videos? What it can and cannot do (2026)
Contents: Can Claude make videos?
Claude can make short animated videos with Claude Motion, a beta feature on its Team and Enterprise plans. However, it cannot generate realistic video footage. That’s because Claude has no video generation model. For example, if you ask Claude Motion for a 30-second explainer of your quarterly numbers, you get moving charts, words and shapes that you can download as an MP4. If you ask it for a woman walking through a market at dusk, it has nothing to give you. For a longer video with a narrator and the same characters from start to finish, you can connect Claude to a video tool such as Scenema.
We surveyed Anthropic’s help pages and documentation in October 2026 and pulled out what Claude can and cannot do with video. If you only need the short answers, jump to the TL;DR.
Can Claude make videos?
Claude can create videos in three ways, and each gives you a different kind of video:
| How | What you get | Realistic footage | Claude plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Motion | Short animations of text, charts, shapes and images, exported as MP4 | No | Team and Enterprise (beta) |
| Code you render | Animations Claude writes as code, rendered by a video tool on your computer | No | Depends on the tool |
| A connector to a video tool | A finished video from the connected tool, such as a narrated explainer from Scenema | Depends on the tool | Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise |
Claude Motion makes short animations
Claude Motion turns your content into short animations, such as an explainer for a company meeting, an animated chart for a board deck or a product walkthrough. Claude builds each animation as code that moves the text, charts, shapes and images in it, and it plays like a short video. Those are the only things it animates. Claude Motion uses no video generation model, so it cannot create realistic footage or people, such as a face, a crowd or a filmed scene. You can ask for changes in the chat, such as a slower scene or a new number, and the rest stays as it was. To download it, you export it as an MP4 file.
Claude Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise plans only. It is on by default for Team plans, and an owner has to turn it on for Enterprise plans.
Code you render makes custom animations
Claude can also write animation code. A separate video tool then turns that code into a video file. Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding tool, can run the commands for that tool on your computer. This route gives the most control, but you install and set up the tools yourself. Like Claude Motion, the result is animation built from code rather than generated footage. Our guide to what AI animation is explains how generated animation differs.
A connector to a video tool makes a finished video
Claude can make a finished video when it is connected to a video tool. Connectors use the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard Anthropic created for AI apps to use other tools. Once a tool is connected, Claude can take actions in it for you, such as creating a project.
Scenema has a connector of this kind for AI-animated explainer videos, including long narrated ones. You describe the video in Claude, or point it to files in your Scenema library. Claude then uses Scenema to write the script, record the narration, plan and draw the shots, animate them and export the video, with the same characters in every scene. See the Scenema MCP page for how it works, and the MCP docs for setup.
Anthropic’s guide to custom connectors covers the Pro and Max plans. It also covers Team and Enterprise plans, where an owner first adds the connector for the organization. The Free plan is not listed.
Planning the video in Claude costs no Scenema credits. On scenema.ai, chatting with Scenema’s Director uses credits. Through the connector, the conversation happens in Claude, and you pay Scenema only for the work it does, such as the script, the narration and each shot.
Can Claude watch videos?
Unfortunately, Claude cannot watch a video file for you. Anthropic’s list of supported uploads covers documents such as PDF, DOCX and TXT, and images in JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP format, but no video formats. Anthropic’s documentation also notes that for an animated GIF, Claude reads only the first frame.
To get Claude’s help with a video, give it what it can read:
- A transcript: Paste the script or an automatic transcript, and Claude can summarize it, check it or rewrite it.
- Screenshots: Upload stills of key moments, and Claude can describe them or suggest changes.
- A storyboard or brief: Share the plan as a document, and Claude can review the structure before anything is made.
Can Claude edit videos?
Claude cannot open or edit a video file in the chat, because it cannot read video. It can still help with an edit in two ways. It can write an edit plan, such as a list of cuts, captions and timings for you to follow in your editor. It can also write the commands or code for an editing tool, which you then run yourself. Developers using Claude Code can have it run those commands on their own computer.
For a new video rather than an edit, a connected video tool does the work end to end.
What can Claude do for video production?
Claude is useful at almost every stage of making a video, apart from generating the footage:
- Script writing: Drafts, rewrites, changes of tone and translations.
- Shot lists and storyboards: Breaking a script into numbered shots with what each one shows.
- Prompts for video tools: Turning a rough idea into detailed prompts for a video model.
- Diagrams and explainers in the chat: Interactive charts and visuals to work out an idea before it becomes a scene.
- Titles, descriptions and captions: Written for YouTube, social posts or a course page.
- Reviewing documents: Turning a PDF, a report or lesson notes into a script.
For a full method, see our guide on how to write a script for a long YouTube video.
How do you make a video with Claude?
The quickest way to make a video with Claude is to connect it to a video tool and ask for the video in the chat. With Scenema, it works like this:
Connect Scenema to Claude
Add Scenema as a connector once, as described in the MCP docs, and sign in to Scenema.
Describe the video
Tell Claude the topic, the audience, the length and the style, or point it to a script or document in your Scenema library.
Review the script and the look
Scenema drafts the narration and revises it when you ask, or keeps your own script word for word. You pick a voice and a style.
Let Scenema make it
Scenema records the narration, plans and animates every shot, and exports the video. You can ask for a different take on any single shot.
You can open the project on scenema.ai at any time to watch it, change a scene or download the video.
Make a narrated explainer from Claude
Connect Scenema to Claude and ask for a video in the chat. Scenema writes the script, records the narration and animates every shot with the same characters from start to finish.
The TL;DR on whether Claude can make videos
Can Claude make videos? Claude can make short animated videos with Claude Motion, a beta feature on Team and Enterprise plans that exports MP4 files. It cannot create realistic footage. Connected to a video tool such as Scenema, Claude can produce a full narrated video.
Can Claude make videos for free? Claude Motion is only on Team and Enterprise plans, and Anthropic’s guide to custom connectors covers Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, so the Free plan has neither. Scenema’s own free plan gives 200 credits once on sign-up, for scripts of up to 1,000 characters, exported at 480p with a watermark.
What is Claude Motion? Claude Motion is a beta feature on Claude’s Team and Enterprise plans that turns your content into short animations, exported as MP4 files. It animates text, charts, shapes and images with code and does not use a video generation model.
Can Claude watch videos? Claude cannot watch videos, because its supported uploads include documents and images but no video formats. You can share a transcript or screenshots instead.
Can Claude edit videos? Claude cannot open or edit a video file. It can write an edit plan, or the commands for an editing tool that you run yourself.
Can Claude generate videos? Claude cannot generate realistic video, because it has no video generation model. It can create animated videos from code with Claude Motion, or produce a full video through a connected tool such as Scenema.
Can ChatGPT make videos? ChatGPT cannot generate video by itself either. Our article on whether ChatGPT can make videos explains what it can do.
